Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume V1 is the only volume, covering the Ecclesiastical Corporations of Oxford, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Cluttons. The preferments in this volume concern the Oxford Bishoprick Estates, which were vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 11 December 1869 by vacancy. ; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports. ; However, it is important to mention that a portion of the Oxford Episcopal Estates was re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporation on 29 September 1876 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette in February 1877. These estates were then subsequently transferred back to the Church Commissioners as Bishopric Late Permanent Estates (under the Episcopal Endowments and Stipends Measure, 1943) on 1 October 1954 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 22 October 1954 by Order in Council.; The volume also has added annotations often regarding the disposal of property since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporate later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Oxfordshire, parishes of Ambrosden, Banbury, Burford, Cropredy, Cuddesdon, Fulbrook, Hook Norton, Stanton Harcourt, South Leigh, Taynton and Oxford St. Thomas; the county of Northhamptonshire, parishes of Sibbertoft and Welford; and the county of Berkshire, parish of Bray.
