Immediate source of acquisition

Deposited by Chichester R.D.C. in September 1968 and February 1974. RD/WH/21/1,2 were deposited by the Chief Executive, Chichester District Council in April 1974 and RD/WH/24/2 by Chichester District Museum in May 1981.

Administrative / biographical background

A Rural Sanitary Authority was formed in September 1872 for Westhampnett Union under the Public Health Act of that year. In January 1895 it became Westhampnett Rural District Council under the Local Government Act of 1894.

The R.D.C. was abolished in March 1933 under the West Sussex Review Order. Its area formed part of the new Chichester Rural District Council.

Between 1872 and 1933 there have been several boundary changes which are described below. Full details of these changes may be found in Boundary Changes in West Sussex (W.S.R.O. MP 1348).

Aldingbourne, Appledram, & Barnham : nil

Bersted : 1894, the part of South Bersted in the Urban Sanitary District of Bognor Local Board became a separate parish called Bognor and the part of South Bersted in Westhampnett Rural Sanitary District became a separate parish called Bersted.

Binderton, Binsted, Birdham Boxgrove and East Dean : nil

Donnington : 1896, part of St. Pancras Rural parish amalgamated with Donnington and transferred from Chichester Municipal Borough to Westhampnett R.D.C.

Earnley, Eartham and Eastergate : nil

Felpham : 1913, part of Bersted transferred to Felpham (see WDC/CC6/3 No.9).

New Fishbourne : 1896, Subdeanry Rural Parish amalgamated with New Fishbourne and transferred from Chichester, Municipal Borough to Westhampnett R.D.C.

Hunston, and West Itchenor : nil

Lavant : 1873, formed as a result of the amalgamation of East Lavant and Mid Lavant.

North Mundham : 1897, part of Pagham transferred to North Mundham (see WDC/CC6/2 pp. 65-66).

Oving : 1894, part of Rumboldswhyke not within the City of Chichester transferred to Oving.

Pagham : 1897, part of Pagham transferred to North Mundham (see WOC/CC6/2 pp. 65-66).

Rumboldswhyke : 1894, part of Rumboldswhyke not within the City of Chichester transferred to Oving.
