A youthful musician. Attributed to Rai Bhoj Raj, Mughal, c.1770. Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807. Inscribed below in Persian: ''amal-i rai bhoj raj musavvir' (the work of the painter Rai Bhoj Raj); numbered 32 in Persian inventory note. Tinted drawing, the background coloured in gouache; on an album leaf with gold border and plain outer margin. 128 by 68 mm; page 376 by 254 mm. Reverse: a flower painting. The musician, facing left and dressed in delicate pink, kneels on grassland playing a 'vina,' the end of which is carved in the form of the head of a duck. Two birds fly overhead.
