Hereunto are newly added twoe books [by Simon Goulart] conteyninge the notablest things happened in Europe under the Empire of Charles the ffifte, Ferdinand the first, Maximilian the second and Rudolph the second. ffirst tome'. Preface addressed to Eberwin [Wirich], Count of Bentheim (1576-1596) by S.G.S. [Simon Goulart, of Senlis] dated 15 March 1595. The English text in this manuscript ends with an account of the reign of the Emperor Maximilian (1459-1515) and does not include Goulart's continuation of the chronicle. The chronicle by Johann Carion (1499-1537), known as the Chronicon Carionis, a chronicle of ecclesiastical events beginning in the ancient world and culminating in a Protestant account of the post-Reformation era. It was begun in the 1530s by Carion, and continued and extended by Philip Melanchthon (1497-1560) and Caspar Peucer (1525-1602). Simon Goulart (1543-1628) added a further extension and a translation into French. The present English translation appears to have been made from the edition of Goulart's French translation published in 1595: 'Chronique et histoire universelle, Contenant les choses plus memorables avenues ès quatre souverains empires, royaumes, republiques, et au gouvernement de l'Eglise, depuis le commencement du monde jusques à l'empereur Charles cinquiesme. Tome premier ... (Geneva, 1595).
