George Hay, the 8th Marquis of Tweeddale, was appointed Governor of Madras and Commander-in-Chief of the Madras Army in 1842. He was Governor until 1848 and was promoted to the office of Field Marshal in 1875. John Briggs was a Major-General in the Madras Army.
