Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume Y3 is the third in the series of four 'Y' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of Rochester, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation.; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Cluttons. The preferments in this volume concern the Rochester Chapter Estates, which were transferred by commutation to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners as follows: 29 September 1865 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette 10 August 1866 by Order in Council; 6 March 1883 and 15 May 1896 (dates published in the London Gazette by Orders in Council).; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being commuted.; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports.; However, it is important to mention that a portion of the Rochester Capitular Estates originally commuted on 10 August 1866 were re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporation on 25 March 1873 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 8 August 1873.; The volume also has annotations often regarding the disposal of property or land since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporate later dates.; The geographical area covered within the volume includes: the county of Kent, parishes of Ashford, Badlesmere, Bearsted, Thornham, Boxley, Chatham, Gillingham, Hartlip, Darenth, Dartford, Higham, Rochester St. Nicholas, Rochester St. Margaret, Strood, Cuxton, Shorne, Merston, Chalk and Southfleet; and the city of London, parish of St. Bride.
