Custodial history

Provenance Mr Dallett bought the document at a book and ephemera sale in the United States. He believes that the manuscript is a deed from a chain of title bundle another being from Penn himself which had been sold off earlier. The donor gave the deed to the Record Office because of the owners' of the land's connection with Horsley

Administrative / biographical background

In 1681-82 Charles II granted William Penn proprietary rights over a province of the American colonies which became Pennsylvania. The king needed to discharge a Crown debt to Penn's father. The land was suitable for settlement and wisely managed it grew rapidly, (See E N Church Oxford History of England, The Later Stuarts 1660-1714 (1934) p326)
