Description

82 files of working papers compiled during his career fron 1957 to 1982 author of books on the Royal Navy and largely consisting of press releases, Presscuttings, notes taken from documents at the Public Record Office, personal correspondence with men involved in the subjects of his books and miscellaneous printed matter. Subjects covered in particular detail include the operations of small irregular RN and RM units during the Second World War, the deployment of Q-ships, dummy warships and the Northern Patrol in the two world wars, river gunboats on the China Station-between the wars, the activities of royal sailors and general naval and maritime developments since 1945, while there are also some contemporary records acquired during his service in the KM from the 1920s to the 1940s including a few documents and printed items covering the North African campaign in 1942 - 1943 and his association with the RN magazine "Ditty Box" from 1944 to 1949.

Administrative / biographical background

After service in the Royal Navy from the 1920's until the end of the Second World War, Mr Hampshire became a historian of the Royal Navy, writing numerous books, in particular on the two world wars, from 1957 onwards.
