It was reported by Westland's that 7 aircraft has been engaged on trials with a blanked-off ECU and a carrier-based PCU. Of these, four had completed 5 hours without surge, one had forced landed due to oil system failure; one had bad low speed engine propeller control characteristics; and one had surged at about 388/390 knots. The ECU and PCU of the aircraft which surged had been examined and no defect was found. This aircraft differed from the others as it had a long chord intake cowl instead of the short chord which will be used in production
