The organisation was founded to raise, by monthly subscriptions, a fund to make advances to its members to enable them to erect or purchase property. Any loan given was dependent on the value of shares purchased. Each member paid an entrance fee upon admission & then bought shares, either 'Ordinary' or 'Deposit' in the society. A maximum limit of £60 was put on the amount of shares bought. Any advance made to members was dependent on the value of their bought shares. Married women, with their husbands consent, could invest into the society. Subscriptions days were every the 4th Tuesday from the initial meeting of the 15 January 1861. The rate of repayment was fixed. Funds paid into the Benefit Society were banked into an account in the York City & County Banking Co.The first AGM was held on 15th January 1861 at the Oddfellows Hall, Middlesbrough. The Chairman & President at that first meeting was Thos. W. Craster, M. D. Trustee of North Riding Infirmary, Mayor George Bottomley (Draper) was also on the board. Other members:- W. Petchell, Iron Merchant, also on the board of Middlesbrough High School & North Riding Infirmary, Wm. Bulmer Councillor with Midddlesbrough Corp (Streets, Markets & Buildings Committee, Gas Works Committee, Drainage Sanitary 7 Burial Grounds Committee).14 February 1905 The last record of an AGM . No further details are given.19 September 1904 is the last dated entry of the Accounts Book. There is mention of a New Accounts Book.1876 - Directors wages book last entry listed.
