See report by Lt HWF Hamilton in war diary - addressed to MMGS Records : "You have no doubt been informed of the death of Capt ELE Paine which occurred on Apr 8th. I am very sorry to say that this was a case of suicide - he shot himself through the head with a service revolver - his death was instantaneous. He had been drinking very heavily for some months and this undoubtedly affected his brain. This matter has been kept very quiet here, the impression being that it was an accident, I only give you these facts in confidence as I consider you should be in possession of them………";Other Notes: PAINE, Captain, E L E, 17th Bty. Machine Gun Corps (Motors). 8th April 1917. Age 38. Son of Helen Paine, of Greve d'Azelte, Jersey, Channel Islands. C. 66. Deir El Belah War Cemetery, Palestine;
