Description (What the record is about)
-
This scribal manuscript is written in a very neat secretary hand and details Adolph Schwarzenberg's triumph at the Fortress of Raab (now modern-day GyQr) when he disguised some of his men as Turks to trick the Turkish occupiers of the fortress into opening the gates for a delivery thereby allowing Schwarzenberg's army to sieze it from the inside.
The title reads: "A true and particular advertisement, how the noble Lord Adolph Baron of Schwartzenburg, with a small band of men marched into Nether Hungary and took in the fortress of Rabb, beat away the mortal enemies of our faith, and reduced the place under the obedience of the Empire..."
A marginal note in 17th-century hand stipulates the text was "translated out of the German tongue". And another marginal note in a different hand details: "the 19 day of March last viz 1598 after our computation"- correcting the original date in the title of 29 March. Considering the handwriting, it is possible this text dates from c.1598.
