Letter of Thomas Lamb, Secretary, Philanthropic Lodge, No. 142, King's Lynn to Robert Leslie sending two pounds and eight shillings for the registration of John Whaley, Valentine Grant, Nicholas Riddy, Thomas Drain, Edward Morgeson, Samuel Wright, Henry Capes and Thomas Lamb. Sends a list of officers as Michael Alexander Gage, Worshipful Master, Daniel Mathews, Senior Warden, John Whaley, Junior Warden, Thomas Drain, Senior Deacon, Samuel Wright, Junior Deacon, Valentine Grant, Treasurer, Thomas Lamb, Secretary and William Robinson, Tyler. Names additional members as Charles Smith, Nicholas Reddy, Edward Morgeson and Henry Capes. Seeks delivery of membership certificates for Daniel Mathews, William Robinson and John Ruddiman. Explains the change of Lodge meeting place from the Sun, Norfolk Street to the Maid's Head Inn. Endorsed with draft reply from Robert Leslie sending the membership certificates and requesting one pound and four shillings for the additional eight certificates requested.

Administrative / biographical background

Philanthropic Lodge was granted a warrant on 22 March 1810 by the Antients' Grand Lodge to meet as No. 142B. The Lodge was constituted on 14 May 1810 while meeting at the Maid's Head Inn, Tuesday Market Place, Lynn, [sometimes called Lynn Regis and now known as King's Lynn] Norfolk. After the Antients' and Moderns' Grand Lodges formed a union to meet as the United Grand Lodge of England, the Lodge was renumbered in 1814 to meet as No. 172. The Lodge was renumbered in 1832 to meet as No. 124. In 1863 the Lodge was renumbered on the last occasion to meet as No. 107. The Lodge has met in many inns and taverns around King's Lynn but now meets at the Duke's Head Hotel, King's Lynn.
