These records were deposited by Mr. W. N. Thursby, the former Secretary of the Manchester Teachers' Association, in September 1984.

Administrative / biographical background

In December 1870, representatives from three groups, Manchester District Teachers' Association, Manchester and District Wesleyan Teachers' Association and Manchester and Salford District Church of England Teachers' Association, met to decide upon a general union of teachers for the area. The first General Meeting was held on 11 February 1871 and the new body was called the Manchester and District Union of Teachers. The Manchester and District Catholic Teachers' Assiciation joined later on 30 September 1871. The Union was affiliated to the National Union of Elementary Teachers.

As a result of the Easter Conference of the N.U.E.T. in April, 1873, the union in Manchester was re-organised. There was a preliminary meeting of representatives from Manchester, Salford, Bolton, Oldham, Ashton, Stockport and Macclesfield on 29 November, 1873 and they agreed to form a union of teachers according to the recommendations of the N.U.E.T. It was to be called the Manchester District Union of Elementary Teachers and it had its first General Meeting on 31 January 1874. The Manchester Teachers' Association(see M493/ ) was also set up in early 1874 and this organisation formed part of the larger District Union.

On 16 December 1893, its name was changed to the Lancashire South East District Union. In 1904, the union ceased to exist in that form and its place was taken by the larger Lancashire County Association of the National Union of Teachers.
