Administrative / biographical background

The India High Commission, established in London in 1920, took over certain responsibilities hitherto exercised by the India Office e.g. the Stores Department, the Indian students' advisory service, the issue of civil leave pay and pensions etc. In Feb 1922 it acquired additional responsibilities including civilian steamship passages, exhibitions and the care of destitute lascars, and from Feb 1924 it was responsible for the recruitment to certain official posts in India.
