Administrative / biographical background

St. Matthias in Wheeler Street, on the borders of Hockley & Lozells, was consecrated in 1855. A parish was assigned out of St. George's, Birmingham in 1856. In 1874 parts of the parish of St. Matthias were taken to form the parish of St. Saviour, Hockley and in 1899 to form part of the parish of St. Edward, Birmingham. The living was a perpetual curacy until 1868, when it became a vicarage in the gift of the rectors of; St. Martin's, St. George's, St. Thomas' and All Saints', Birmingham. In 1948 the church was closed and in 1949 the benefice and parish united with those of St. George, Birmingham
