Under the rules of the ASW, Executive Cttee permission was required by district management cttees. and local branches when they wished to impose a local levy, i.e. a contribution in addition to the basic subscription. The purposes of the levies include: maintenance of district delegate (s); donations to charities and pressure grps. (e.g. Council of Action); affiliation to political bodies and trades councils; and benevolence to members and/or veterans. Enclosures in the corres. include local fund rulebks, summonses to special mtgs, MC circulars, minutes of mtgs. (few), and returns of votes taken on levies.

The corres. is arranged in 2 series, one for MCs and one for branches, and alphabetically by place name within each series.
Ltrs. concerning local levies are included in the general secretary's out-ltr. bks., 1916-65. (MSS.78/ASW/3/1/1-). To find the corres. it is necessary to use the entries in the contemporary index for the branch or MC in question. These index entries do not distinguish corres concerning levies from other corres.
