The volume also contains 'principal matters' from 'an old book, called the black book' updated annually by various officers of the town and recording accounts of rents, forfeits, profits of courts, fairs, et al by the bailiff's, hallwardens and other officers; ancient customs observed by sundry persons for admittance by general consent into the liberty and freedom of Guildford, c1327-c1500, pp136-170. The 'black book' of Guildford has since been lost. A memorandum at the beginning of the volume states that this transcript has been examined against the original manuscript book given by George Austen to the town of Guildford, and was made because the two original copies, one of which was to left to the school and the other kept in Austen's family, were lost or mislaid. The entry is signed by John Shotter, Town Clerk, 6 Sep 1754
