Mrs. Kartar Pritam was born in 1923 in Lahore, one of eight children of Mr. and Mrs. Dogar Singh. The children were called Vidyavanti Kaur, Shanti Kaur, Mangal Singh, Kartar Kaur, Tehal Singh, Iqbal Kaur, Jeet Singh, and Jagdish Kaur. Mrs. Pritam was married to Mr. Dhunda Singh Pritam in 1938.
Mr. Dhunda Singh Pritam was born in Baroda, India in 1917. Dhunda left for Britain with his father-in-law after only 10 months of marriage. Mrs. Pritam stayed behind with her in-laws. Mrs. Pritam left for Britain in 1948, where she had six children:

Mr. Dhunda Singh has worked as a pedlar, textile worker and business man (he owned a shop).
