Description (What the record is about)
-
This collection consists primarily of the papers and title deeds of the Barker family, but also includes material relating to the Watkinson, Scholler and other North Derbyshire families with whom they intermarried. So important were these intermarriages that the families in question have been used as the basis for arrangement in this list. The papers of these families contain most of the earlier records in the collection as the Barkers did not possess extensive estates themselves until the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. At the period at which the first notices of them appear they were in obscure circumstances and their first trade was that of carpenter. The family fortunes were only really founded in the eighteenth century by Thomas Barker who became Steward to the Duke of Rutland, but the family connections probably go back further than this.
Although mainly concerned with the estates, the varied interest and professions of members of the Barker family are also represented. Several were interested in lead mining, William Barker was a merchant in Smyrna and Charles Barker a captain in the Royal Navy. Two members of the family were in the medical profession but nothing survives of their professional records save the certificates of Thomas Barker (b.1808).
A pedigree of the Barker family of Darley, Rowsley and East Lodge, Derbyshire, is available.
