Description (What the record is about)
-
This file, when received in the East Sussex Record Office in 1956, was made up of documents filed through the centre on a coarse string with parchment tabs. The fact that the documents were in a slightly different order to the list of them prepared for the National Register of Archives some years previously and that many have two file holes suggests they have been resorted at least twice, especially as some of them were enrolled in the series of Chamberlains' Accounts (RYE/60) and Court of Record Books (RYE/33) and some were not. Apparently several files of drafts have at some time in the 17th or 18th century been made up into two files, the present file and that which follows (RYE/140). The sorting between these two was not quite consistent; RYE/139/19 refers to Maidstone, Kent, while several Rye documents have found their way into the second file. A few originals are included among these drafts.
The file has been repaired and the sheets guarded and stitched into one volume; the numeration follows the original commencing at the bottom and the appropriate folio number has been added in brackets after the document number.
Two classes of records were included in this file, (i) corporation conveyances and (ii) enrolled deeds. The latter cannot always be traced in the appropriate record (i.e. Chamberlains' Account Books to 1588 and Court of Record Books after 1592). That there were some irregularities in enrollment is clear from the gap, 1588-92, and the endorsement on RYE/139/56 'The records of recoveryes and dedes lefte not enrolled in Mr. Appletons tyme.' This endorsement might well apply to RYE/139/50, a recovery suffered in 1589 and not entered of record until 1594. On the other hand RYE/139/66 'enrolled at Mr. Appleton's Death' does not seem to be entered, nor is RYE/139/67, though a related deed is.
All documents are on paper unless otherwise stated.
