Administrative / biographical background (Historical or biographical information about the creator of the record and the context of its creation)
-
These are the records of the post 1835 Arundel Borough, as reformed by the Municipal Corporation Act. Under this Act the old Corporation with its ancient privileges and abuses was abolished and the right of ratepayers to elect the Borough Councillors was established. There is a separate catalogue for the records of the pre 1835 Borough but searchers should be aware that there is unavoidably some overlap between the two catalogues.
A Local Government Board Order of 9 March 1876 repealed the 1785 Arundel Local Act and transferred the functions of the local commissioners to an Urban Sanitary Authority (see BO/AR/24/4/5). The members and officers of the Borough also acted as the Urban Sanitary Authority.
The Arundel (Extension) Order, 1902, transferred part of Tortington parish to Arundel Borough. See BO/AR/24/4/18 for a sealed copy of the map relating to this order.
Arundel was also a parliamentary Borough. It lost one of its two MP's under the 1832 Reform Act and was completely disenfranchised in 1868.
