PUBLIC INQUIRY PAPERS

[Legal documents and other papers were stored by the Commission in deed boxes numbered 1 - 3(Hat), 1 - 3(WGC) and 4 - 12. Only numbers 1 - 3(Hat), 3(WGC), 4, 7, 11 and 12, all containing papers relating to public inquiries and similar legal matters in which the Commission or its predecessors were involved, and number 10 (for the contents of which see LICENSED PREMISES COMMITTEE part number 7) have been deposited.

The papers relating to public inquiries and hearings, an arbitration and a court case consist mainly of multiple copies of briefs to Counsel, proofs of evidence, maps and plans, copies of correspondence and other items brought in evidence. In some cases there are also transcripts, notes or reports on the proceedings at the inquiry. Papers relating to a single matter were often to be found in two or more boxes (see list). These have now been brought together, though (except in the case of boxes 1 and 3, Hatfield Gale Damage, 1958) papers from different boxes have not been mingled. Duplicates have generally been discarded, annotated or fuller versions of a document being retained for preference. Original bundles and envelopes, however have (unless stated otherwise) been stripped only of items duplicated within that bundle or envelope, whilst nothing has been removed from any file.

The majority of documents are undated or are copies of earlier documents, so in most cases only the date of the inquiry etc is given below].
