Holt Montgomery Hewitt, Lieutenant, 109th Battalion. Machine Gun Corps (Inf), 1st July 1916. Age 29. Son of James H. and Jeannie D. Hewitt, of 97, Mornington Park, Bangor, Co. Down. Mill Road Cemetery, Thiepval, Somme, France, XIX. D. 9.Holt Montgomery Hewitt was born in Ballymccarrett, Belfast on 11/6/87. The son of James Henry Hewitt of ‘Altamont’, Bangor, Co Down. His commission application for the Regular Army, dated 30/9/14, states that he was unmarried, address as above, address for correspondence as a Cpl ‘A’ Company 3 Royal Irish Rifles (Down Regt), Claudeboye Camp, Co Down. Previously served for 2 years in the UVF in the North Down Battalion in Bangor. Educated at the Royal Academical Institution Belfast. Originally enlisted in 13 Royal Irish Rifles as No 17872 in Bangor on 14/9/14, occupation coal shipping Manager. He served an apprenticeship as an accountant from April 1907 to (ur). Struck of strength on being gazetted 2nd Lieutenant to the Ulster Division 12/10/14, height 5' 8", weight 160 lbs, complexion fair, eyes blue, hair fair, CofE. A casualty form for him as a Lieutenant 109 Company MGC (9 Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers) to T/Lieutenant 23/1/16 (seniority from 2/9/15), embarked on the SS City of Benares 4/10/15. On 24/1/16 he was attached to 109 Brigade MGC and posted for duty with that Brigade 19/2/16. Granted leave to the UK 2-11 April 1916. His ID disk was taken from his body and returned to his parents but no other effects were found. In his will he left £254 1s 10d. (Officers Papers - PRO)

They were the brothers of the Rev James Marshall Hewitt MA (Vicar of St Marks, Haydock) and curate of St Andrews Southport 1912-15 who was the sole surviving son. His eldest brother Lt Hewitt was killed in June 1915 with the N Lancs Regt. Before the war all were members of the UVF and were also prominent Rugby Football players for North of Ireland Football Clubs. They were the sons of Mr JH Hewitt who lived at Altamount, Bangor, Co Down. Photos (Southport Visiter 15/7/16.)
