Description

Mainly from Tufton Beamish on Intelligence course, Karachi, and subsequently at Barrackpore/Calcutta, Apr 1942 - Feb 1943 (67 items)

TB attended the Intelligence School, Karachi, in Apr - May 1942 (nos 1-4). On his way thence to Barrackpore his train was ambushed by Hur rebels, and there is a graphic account of the attack (no 5A, May 1942; see also nos 5B (with photographs), and 18). Subsequently he worked in Intelligence at Barrackpore, Bengal (nos 5-10), and then near Calcutta (HQ 15 Indian Corps, no 10 advanced Base PO); there is little detail about his work, though from Oct 1942 he was seeking a change to more active service. No 10 includes two photographs taken at Karachi (cp CLW/1/1/1(c); in Sep 1942 (nos 24-26) he meets his brother John at Darjeeling. Nos 64, 65 are additional letters to his brother John ('Johann'); nos 66, 67 are Christmas greetings from John (to 'Alfred Georgius Höst' - an alias for Tufton)
