The unnamed lodge was established in 1797 and met at the Prince George, Plymouth Dock [now Devonport], Devon. Later in 1797 the lodge left Devonport and moved to the Hambro' Arms in St. Mawes, Cornwall. In 1799 the lodge returned to Devonport, Devon, meeting at the Earl Howe, Clowen Lane and the lodge continued there until their last meeting in November 1799.
In December 1799 the warrant was purchased by the Royal Invalids Corps and lodge met at the Welcome Home Sailor, Devonport. In 1800 the lodge moved from Devonport to Plymouth. The lodge now meets at St. Aubyn Masonic Hall, Devonport Road, Plymouth. In 1801 the lodge was named the Royal Invalids' Lodge and in 1809 it was renamed the Lodge of Charity. Although the lodge dating from 1797 to 1799 is marked in Lane's 'Masonic Records' as a separate lodge to that dating from 1799 to the present day, the two periods have been classed as being the same lodge, therefore the Lodge of Charity was awarded its Bi-centenary in 1997 by the United Grand Lodge of England. For annual returns of the lodge dating from 1799 - 1813, see SN 1369 - 'Lodge of Charity, No. 223, Plymouth'.
