The Papers relating to the 1st Battalion the Manchester and Salford Volunteer Infantry, of which Philips was eventually commanding officer, were given to the Art Gallery by Rev. J.W.H. Faulkner of Bedford, husband of J. L. Philips's great-great-grand-daughter, and passed on to the Library in August 1969. Those relating to the Rochdale Canal were given to the Library by the latter's son A. H. Faulkner of Evesham in March 1969. They were all found among the papers of the late Rev. Nathaniel Gilbert Philips, great-great-grandson of John Leigh Philips.
Further papers of John Leigh Philips (M34/1/4 and M84/3/1-9) and of his descendants (M84/4-14) were given to the Library in 1983 by Mrs. C.G.J. Faulkner, great-great-grand-daughter of J. L. Philips.

John Leigh Philips (1761-1814) was an important figure in the Manchester of his day. He was businessman, soldier, naturalist and patron of the arts. With his brother, Francis, he continued his grandfather Nathaniel Philips's, silk manufacturing business under the name of J. L. Philips and Brother, as well as being a partner in Philips and Lee, cotton spinners. His collection of natural history specimens form the nucleus of the Manchester Natural History Museum, while his collection of books, prints and paintings were the subject of a nine day sale after his death. He was a member of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society in whose Memoirs and Proceedings, 1890, 1900 and 1901, are articles by F. J. & W.B. Faraday entitled Selections from the Correspondence of Lt. Col. John Leigh Philips of Mayfield, Manchester.
