In 1905 the band won first prize at Crystal Palace winning 'The Grand Shield' which they won again in 1933, the only band to win twice. Hayden Wood composed a peice for the Band Called Merridale.
St. Hilda's Band, originally named Dennisons Family Band. St Hilda's Colliery Band comprised workers from St Hilda's Colliery. They went on to win the National Championship of Great Britain several times, a Royal Command performance at Buckingham Palace, made numerous 78 rpm recordings. They were regarded as professionals after the closure of the colliery in 1926 and were not eligible to compete, however, they continued to perform for ten years.
