Description (What the record is about)
-
The collection consists of original documents relating to property in Hellidon, Little Peatling in Leicestershire and in the Seven Dials area of London. There are also letters to and from various members of the Holthouse family and their connections. Of particular interest are the letters written by Mrs Heaney to her sister Mrs Moses Scrafton. Mrs Heaney was governess in a French aristocratic family. The letters describe life during the French Revolution and were written between 1789 and 1815.
The papers of Charles Scrafton Holthouse, vicar of Hellidon, include letters from William Butterfield who assisted him in the restoration of Hellidon Church.
Two of Charles Scrafton Holthouse's brothers settled in Australia and their letters reveal something of the conditions of the early settlers.
The letters of the incumbents of Hellidon to Edwin Hermus Holthouse are of particular interest. They illustrate the financial situation of the country and those living during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The collection also includes papers amassed by Edwin Hermus Holthouse while pursuing genealogical research. There are transcripts of wills, copies of certificates, etc., relating principally to the Bradgate, Scrafton, Parkin and Holthouse families. There are also a number of other families with whom there were more tenuous connections. There are also notes on local history, particularly of Hellidon.

Administrative / biographical background (Historical or biographical information about the creator of the record and the context of its creation)
-
The Holthouse family came originally from Germany. Carsten Holthouse (I) was born in Buchen in 1738; he came to London and became involved in the sugar refining business. He married Mary Dolge and their son Carsten (II) was apparently baptised at St. John's Lutheran Church, Ludgate Hill. The registers, however, do not survive. Carsten (II) was also a sugar refiner. He married Harriatt Parkin and acquired an interest in the Bradgate and Scrafton properties. Carsten Holthouse (II) had five sons:- Carsten (III) who became a surgeon; Henrey James, a lawyer; Charles Scrafton, vicar of Hellidon; and Edward and Thomas Le Gay who went to Australia. Edwin Hermus Holthouse was the second son of Carsten Holthouse (III) and he acquired the advowson of Hellidon under the will of his uncle Charles Scrafton Holthouse.
