Description (What the record is about)
-
This manuscript is titled 'Discussions of History' - "Historiae Synopsis: Prologomena in Sequentem tractatum". It contains largely historical accounts of individual people transcribed into Latin, possibly as an exercise for William Cavendish (1590-1628) as the pupil of Thomas Oates, however it is uncertain whether this is William's hand.
The first text recounts Biblical characters beginning with Noah and his sons. The titles of the texts include: "Compendium primae Moarchiae", "Series regnum", Res Ecclesiae" and "Viri illustre in Ecclesia", names of historical figures mentioned are written in the margin.
On inside of cover is written: "Liber Th. Otrs", in a different hand to the main text - a reference to Thomas Oates, tutor to William Cavendish (later 2nd Earl) 1602-1604.
