After the institution of a new incumbent, possession of the temporarlities of the benefice was vested in him by induction. (Prebendaries and Cathedral dignitaries were installed) The bishop or his commissary issued a mandate to induct to the archdeacon, who usually commissioned a neighbouring incumbent to act for him, or made a general mandate to all clergy within the archdeaconry.
