Administrative / biographical background

The livings of Preston and Hove were held by one vicar until 1878, by which time their respective populations had increased, and it was necessary to separate the two. Initial plans to enlarge St Peter's church were abandoned, and it was decided to build a new church nearby. The nave of St John's was completed and dedicated on 26 October 1902, and it replaced St Peter's as the parish church at the end of 1908. Communion services were no longer held at St Peter's after July 1987, although baptisms, marriages and funerals continued to 1989. The building was vested in the Redundant Churches Fund with effect from 1 June 1990.

Between 1531 and 1878 the livings of St Peter Preston and St Andrew Hove were united.
