The possession of real estate was one of the chief sources of the city's income. Most of the property acquired was initially within the city but as time went on more and more land was acquired both in the city and in the country. In the 16th and 17th centuries, for example, the Corporation acquired Gaunts Earthcott and the Lea, Almondsbury, Hampe, Stockland Gaunt, Winterbourne Gonner, Brewham and Portishead.
