Administrative / biographical background

In 1726 the house of Thomas Hutson was registered as a meeting place for the Baptists in Painswick but the congregation had no permanent church until 1831 when they took over the Wesleyan Methodist chapel in New Street which had been built in 1806. The chapel closed in 1983 when the congregation joined with the United Reformed Church in the village to form Christchurch, Painswick. The chapel was put up for sale in 1985 with planning permission to convert it into retail premises. The depositor's husband was the church secretary
