Administrative / biographical background

Ernest is Albert Bracegirdle senior's brother-in-law, his sister Amy married him (see Tape no.109 & deposit no.46). His family had a market garden on 'Muddy Lane' off Woodhouse Lane, Heyhead, next door to the Bracegirdle. They had come from Baguley before that. They then moved to Woodside Farm in the Heyhead area and later to Old Wood farm in Baguley. They ran these as farms rather than market gardens. Compulsory purchase orders when the land from both these farms was required for building meant that the family finally had to move to Atherton in Lancashire to find the kind of farm they needed to carry on. The farms were worked by the family as Ernest had several brothers, though his father died in the 1918 flu epidemic. (For further details of his working life, and dates see the summary of Tape 1056.)

After his family had settled in Atherton, Ernest went to work at Wythenshawe Park as a gardener. It was then owned by Manchester Corporation. He was there for twenty four years and retired about ten years ago. He is now 74.

He married Frances Jackson from Poundswick Hall Farm (see deposit no. 1674) on June 15 1940, and they came to live in 'Daisy Cottage'. The house was built in 1912, and used to be the chauffeur's cottage for a big house known as 'The Cedars', now demolished. When Manchester Corporation developed the Wythenshawe estate they left 'Daisy Cottage' standing and let it as a council house. When the donors went to live there it was farmland all around and there was James Dean's smithy and Joseph Swan's wheelwrights across the road from them. The area was then known as Brownley (or Brownlow) Green.
