Description

The collection consists of 5 boxes of the private papers of the Isherwood family between c1841 and 1971. It encompasses a great variety of material including letters, travel diaries and scrapbooks. Many items relate to Kathleen Bradshaw Isherwood (née Machell Smith), but the collection also includes World War One letters from her husband Frank Bradshaw Isherwood to his mother and books and papers relating to the childhood of writer Christopher Isherwood and his brother Richard.

Administrative / biographical background

Acquired in 1982 from Mr. Clarke, a retired photographer of the Stockport Advertiser. Many of these papers were used by writer Christopher Isherwood in researching his book "Kathleen and Frank" (published 1971).
