Description (What the record is about)

Dissertatio de Theophilo Antiocheno vero librorum ad Autolycum auctore illiusque aetate et de vero eorundem librorum ordine'. A treatise by Henry Dodwell (1641-1711) concerning the Apologia addressed to Autolycus by Theophilus, Patriarch of Antioch from c.169 to c.183. The text was written by Dodwell in 1709. In 1708 Dodwell was consulted by Gottlieb Schelwig (1683-1727), of Danzig, who intended to publish an edition of the Apologia by Theophilus. In response Dodwell wrote and supplied his Dissertation. See Francis Brokesby, 'The life of Mr. Henry Dodwell' (London, 1715), pp. 519-20. On 13 April 1709 Dodwell wrote to Thomas Hearne that he had almost finished his discourse and transcript concerning Theophilus Antiochenus for Mr. Schelwig (Bodleian Library, MS. Rawl. letters 25, f. 479). Two separate copies of Dissertatio are bound together in this manuscript; the second is in Dodwell's hand: ff. 1-44. Copy one. A fair copy, in an unidentified hand. Following the title at f. 1r is an addition 'Nondum edita'. A pencilled annotation suggests that this note is in the hand of Martin Joseph Routh (1755-1854). ff. 45-66. Copy two. In Dodwell's hand, but with a title page in the hand of ff. 1-44.
