Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume DX covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of Carlisle and Ripon, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation.; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Smith & Watkins and Messrs. Pickering & Smith. The preferments in this volume include the following: the Carlisle Chapter Estates, which were transferred by commutation to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 29 September 1852 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 17 December 1852 by Order in Council; the Ripon Bishoprick Estates, which were transferred by commutation to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on the following dates: 15 February 1848 (effective date); 21 November 1856 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 19 May 1857 by Order in Council; and 5 December 1882 (date published in the London Gazette by Order in Council); and the Ripon Chapter Estates which were transferred by commutation to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 25 December 1873 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 11 August 1874 by Order in Council. ; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as it was the most comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent and condition of the preferments that had been transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports.; However, it is important to mention that a portion of the Carlisle Capitular Estates were re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporation as follows: the tithe rent charges on 1 January 1865 (effective date) and the land on 2 February 1865 (effective date) and published in the London Gazette on 30 June 1865. These estates were then later transferred back to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners (as Chapter Late Permanent Estates under the Cathedrals Measure, 1931) on 25 March 1938 (effective date) and published in the London Gazette by Order in Council on 31 December 1937. ; The volume also has added annotations often regarding the disposal of property or land since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporate later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Cumberland, parishes of Bewcastle, Cammerton, Caldbeck, Carlisle St. Mary, Carlisle St. Cuthbert, Castle Sowerby, Sebergham, Hutton in the Forrest, Thursby, Ousby, Castle Carrock, Addingham and Lowther; and the county of Yorkshire, parishes of Howden, Riccall and Northallerton.
