Son of Samuel Barker, Meadow Bank, Heywood. Born 1898 at Heywood. Bury Grammar School; RossallS. Officer Training Corps, June 1916 to June 1917. Gazetted 1917; Machine Gun Corps 33rd Battalion; 2nd Lieutenant; Western Front. Killed 15th April 1918 at Meteren.

Percy Barker was born in Heywood on 9th July 1898, the son of Samuel Barker and his wife
Ada (nee Clegg). He was baptized at St James’ Church Heywood on 2nd August. At the time
of the 1901 Census, the family was living in William Street, Woodleigh. Samuel Barker was a
timber merchant and builder. Percy’s elder sister, Elsie had been bom in 1893 and another
sister, Marjorie, was born in January 1906. Percy Barker joined Form Introitus of Bury
Grammar School on 15th September 1907. The family by this time was living at Meadow Bank,
Heywood. The school’s Admissions Register records that his previous education had been at
The Girls’ Grammar School, Bury’. At this time, some boys started in the junior section run
under the aegis of the Girls' School before moving to the Boys’ Preparatory School. Percy was
a member of Kay House. He left Form Upper IV on 22nd January 1912 and moved to Rossall
College near Blackpool, a school with historic links to BGS. At Rossall he was a member of
the Officers’ Training Corps. He attended St James’ Church in Heywood and was a Lieutenant
in the local Boys’ Brigade.
