Description (What the record is about)
-
This extensive archive, also known as "The Thompson Collection", was acquired by Bolton Central Library in the 1960s, partly through purchase and partly by donation. It was transferred to the Archives Service in 1974.
The records listed below reflect all aspects of the work of the firm in Bolton and elsewhere in South Lancashire from the 1830s to about 1950. They represent a major source of information about the urban and industrial development of the region. Of particular importance are the many items relating to coalmining, especially the plans showing underground workings.
The material also includes records which pre-date the establishment of the business by Joseph Jackson (c. 1830), which seem to have been collected for information and research purposes. Amongst these earlier items are a large number of original plans and surveys of John Albinson of Bolton, land agent and surveyor, who was active from about 1790 to 1850. (See also list ZAL).
The archives described in this list were originally numbered and catalogued in detail by a small team of volunteers under the guidance of the late Mr. G.E.H. Allen, and their arrangement has been followed herein. The detailed catalogue prepared by the team is available to searchers by arrangement with the archivist.
Indexes of subjects and places have been prepared, and these will be found at the beginning of the list, immediately following this introduction.
Other records, relating to the firm have been acquired by the Manchester City and Salford City Archives Services.
There are no items bearing the numbers 545-599, inclusive.
