St. Stephen's School was built in 1870 and services were held there until the church was built in 1884. A District was assigned from All Saints, Elton, by Order in Council, 11 August 1884 (London Gazette 15 August). Part of the District was transferred to the new Christ Church, Walshaw, by Order in Council, 28 May (London Gazette, 31 May 1889).
