St. John's Lodge was granted a warrant to meet by the Moderns' Grand Lodge on 31 August 1790 as No. 562. The Lodge was consecrated on 11 November 1790 and met at the Lion and Dolphin, Market Place, Leicester. The Lodge number changed to No. 562 in 1792. After the Moderns' Grand Lodge formed a union with the Antients' Grand Lodge in 1813 the Lodge met as No. 525 under the United Grand Lodge of England. The Lodge was renumbered as No. 348 in 1832 and then to No. 279, its present number, in 1863. The Lodge met at several inns and hotels in Leicester over time but now meets at Freemasons' Hall, 80 London Road, Leicester.
