PAGET, Henry 1st Earl of Uxbridge: has heard Ld C has come to Bristol to take waters, hopes will benefit from them. Footnote that the inquiry into Navy affairs is again put off - the House is at present very thin for an inquiry of so great consequence. 20 June 1721 London

Hopes Ld C is not staying longer in Bristol because of a return of his complaint. 13 July 1721

Having had his own surveyor look at the house in St James Square, he cannot offer for it, as it appears to be in a much worse condition than Ld C will admit. 4 Aug 1722 Drayton

PARKER, Sir Thomas, Lord Parker, later Lord Chancellor and Earl of Macclesfield: has been trying to arrange election of Mr Clavering [probably Robert, later Professor of Hebrew at Oxford] to lectureship in "this parish", but Dr Roderick, whose death would have occasioned the vacancy, is now recovering. 9 July 1711 Essex St

Draft letter from Ld C to: explains has not waited on Sir Thomas in person [who is at Hertford for the Assizes], because this might provide food for malicious tongues. 11 Aug 1712

Copy letter from Ld C to, on resignation, recommending Mr John Hughes to be continued in office as Secretary of the Commissions of the Peace. 20 April 1718

Has been applied to by Lord Grimston to put Mr Joshua Pembrook into the Commission of the Peace for the Liberty of St Albans, but thinks Ld C knows something to his disadvantage, so requests Ld C to let him know if he is agreeable to his being put into the Commission. 5 Oct. 1719

Further about same. Refers to Lord G. He must answer by five that night. Endorsed by Ld C "D of Somerset to let me know in p'suance of my advice he had permitted ye Dutches to stay in Queens Service etc. I hope possibly some good may come ti to it". Saturday [1711]

Letter of introduction for Captain Lee, who wishes to enter his service, should he "accept of that place (wch I & I hope every good Englishman wishes you in possession of)". Sunday afternoon [1705]

Concern for Ld C's health, explains that no cause for alarm in letter he sent, merely did it in order to avoid sending it all the way to Windsor to Lord Sunderland, where Sir Is Rebow should properly have sent it. 19 Sept 1709 Leic[ester] Fields

SPENCER, Charles, Earl of Sunderland: excuses himself from seeing Ld C that morning. Undated

Compliments on being given Great Seal. No good news from Vienna about Hungary - they seem more concerned about military success in Transylvania than in any treaty. Hopes to return home with Ld Marlborough who is expected in three or four days. Oct 27 - Nov 7 1705 Vienna

Patronage; asks for prebend of Gloucester for a Mr Cook, who failed to get the Deanery in competition with Dr Chetwode, and is an uncle of one of the MPs for Gloucester. 5 Aug 1707

Acknowledges receipt at Windsor of his letter and inclosures from Lord President and Sir Isaac Rebow. Says Queen entirely approves of Ld C's proposals in respect of the matter and has given orders that the writer give the necessary instructions. Hopes Ld C well enough to attend meeting at Cockpit on Wednesday morning, as several things put off at Windsor yesterday. 19 Sept 1709 Whitehall

On Ld C's being out of the administration, and prospects of the election. 30 Sept 1710 Althorp

Has received letters from Lord Marlborough in which he desires to have the opinion of Ld C and other of his friends about the time of his coming over. There are other things mentioned in his letter, and some letters enclosed from Hanover, which are worth Ld C's seeing. He is trying to get a meeting together of Ld C, Lord Godolphin, Lord Somers and Lord Halifax. 19 Oct 1710 Althorp

Has heard that Lady C is on a fair way to recovery, and now writes to say that Mr Cadogan, who is to return to Holland in a few days, wishes to wait on Ld C as he has some papers relating to the Duke of Marlborough's cause and several other things of a more public nature to discuss. 1 Nov 1713 London

Discusses death of chief Baron of Irish Exchequer, Joseph Deane, and appointment of his successor. Suggests Irish be allowed to nominate Gilbert's sucessor when he moves from King's Bench to take up the post, as a consolation for having the Englishman imposed on them. Originally enclosed letter from Lord Chief Justice Forster pressing for the appointment of an Irish nominee. 14 May 1715 Bath

Has heard from some Irish gentlemen that a bill is depending in the Irish House of Lords for confirming some bargains between Lord Clanrickard and his son, "the first a papist nonjuror, and the other, who was called up to the House of Peers in Ireland by the late Ministry and has the same Inclinations". They are supported by the Earls of Abingdon and Anglesey. The Irish gentlemen are apprehensive that such a bill, if passed, would be prejudicial to the Protestant interest in Ireland, and the writer asks Ld C to keep an eye on the matter. Is glad Gilbert has been made chief Baron in Ireland. 18 June 1715 Bath

A committee of Lords to meet at Cockpit tonight, hopes Ld C will be there. Asks him to bring University Bill, as King has spoken to him about it again. Would have waited on Ld C last night, but had some MPs dining with him, who stayed until eleven, but it was probably to good purpose, as he will tell Ld C when he sees him. 13 May 1717

Acknowledges receipt letter, which has read to King, who has ordered a Cabinet Council at Hampton Court for 5 pm, and a Clerk of the Council to attend for orders about the prorogation. HM, drinking the waters makes it impossible to have a Council in the morning. If Ld C will dine with him, he will take care that only M Bernstorff, M Bothmer, and Lord Stanhope are there, and begs he will be at Hampton Court, otherwise there will not be six to make a Council. 8 Aug 1717 Hampton Court

Originally enclosing papers relating to case of Robert Scaresbrick and others, would be glad of opinion what directions should be given to Mr Crackerode upon the matter. 14 Aug 1717 Hampton Court

Wonders whether it would be possible to have a Council at Newmarket if the King decides to stay longer than Monday, for the prorogation of Parliament and the proclamation for notice of their doing business. Asks for Commission to be sent just in case. 1 Oct 1717 [Tuesday] London

Acknowledges receipt of letter but as King not yet decided about going to Cambridge, or returning to Hampton Court, he is sending messenger back to ask for the Commission to be sent as soon as possible, in case the Council is held at Newmarket, so that the King may sign it there. Also H M intends to prorogue Parliament to 21 Nov writer already has proclamation at Newmarket. In case it does not take place there he will take care to have some of those in the Commission attend Ld C at House on Tuesday night. Thursday 2 o'clock Newmarket [Oct 1717]

The King will leave on Monday for Hampton Court, and a Great Council will be held on Tuesday morning there. Writer will keep Commission and hand it over to Ld C at Hampton Court, then "The King dines today at Lord Orford's & tomorrow at Cambridge". Saturday 2 o'clock Newmarket [5 Oct 1717]

SPENCER, Thomas to Captain William Newton at Clarecastle: apology for sending "that, that did not please you", but regrets that he should have been "reprimanded..... in the open Street amongst a cell of known Enemies to the protestant constitution". His withdrawal of friendship and custom will mean a considerable loss. Undated

STEELE, Richard: explaining his motives in having Mr Roberts present his book to Ld C. Endorsed by Ld C "Mr Steel als Bickerstaff". 17 Feb 1710/11 Berry St

Begs for a place in the Charterhouse for a child, Thomas Crump; and copy, in Lady C's hand of Ld C's answer that will try and oblige when his turn for a warrant comes round. Invites Steele into country. 12 July 1711 Berry St St James

Thanks for Ld C's kind answer to his request. Footnote that has just heard the Duke of Newcastle "is dead of a fall off his Horse". 17 July 1711

Has thought of some other way of helping Thomas Crump, wishes to transfer the Charterhouse nomination to the son of his neighbour Cavalry, a man "who has made Crowds, who know they can passe their time much better than in reading purchase my papers at a rate much above their value". 28 Jan 1711/12
