Description

1202. Sack Bremer & Co. Steamers Thames (GU & GV) and Elbe (GW & GX). Feb.-Jun., Dec. 1847, Mar., Apr. 1848, Mar. 1849. 43 items.
Two sets of two 20 horse power oscillating engines, with 27 inch cylinders, 2½ foot strokes.
Also boiler for steamer Queen.

Cylinder and slide - partially coloured drawing; plans and sections of boiler - partially coloured original and reverse drawings; sketch of wheels for screw propelling (on tracing paper); plan of engines and boiler, longitudinal section of engines and boiler, plan of framing for supporting headstock, plan of deck timbers (not coloured), cross-section of engines and boiler, cross-section of boat at after bulkhead - partially coloured original and partially coloured reverse drawings; section and plan of propeller shaft, screw propeller, waste water pipes and valves etc. - 2 sheets of partially coloured drawings; bilge pumps etc. - partially coloured original and reverse drawings; waste water valve - partially coloured drawing; plan and front view of frame, air pumps and condenser etc., working gear, cross-section and plan of engines, end view of engines, feeding pumps, plan and section of upper framing, eccentric and starting gear, air pump connecting rod and piston rod cap, propeller shafting, throttle valve gearing - partially coloured drawings; plan and 2 elevations "of a pair of 20 horse oscillating engines…Thames & Elbe" - coloured original and coloured reverse drawings . All these drawings were made in the London office and all except the sketch of the wheels on tracing paper bear letter codes.
Also sections of boiler for Queen - coloured original, coloured reverse and coloured tracing made in the London office, Nov. 1854 (the drawings note that the Queen had 2 70 horse engines with 46 inch cylinders and 4 foot strokes).

Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 988. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 322, 324.

For Sack Bremer & Co. The boats were screw propeller-driven. Henry Hazleton allocated separate portfolio numbers to all three boats, mistakenly believing that the Queen also had 20 horse oscillating engines, and despite the fact that Thames and Elbe did not have separate drawings: Thames was Pf. 1202; Elbe was Pf. 1203, and Queen was Pf. 1204.

See also: Portfolio 6/91 (working, eccentric and starting gear, throttle valve gearing).
