Administrative / biographical background

John Baker was the second son of John Baker of Duckings in Withyham but was predeceased by his elder brother William. Their father's will (ESRO WA3 186, 6 Nov 1555) mentions his manors of Bungehurst and Isenhurst and his lease of the manor and forge of Birchden in Rotherfield and of Osnersh and Dallingridge farms. Land in Mayfield, Heathfield, Waldron and Herstmonceux had already been settled on his son John. He instructed his sons to release his land in Buxted to the heirs of William Wooddy of Warbleton and formerly of Buxted (? Totheis manor - see KIR/2/1). The will was proved 1 Jul 1556. An inquisition post mortem (SRS 14.63) was taken 12 Jun 1556 which found John's son John Baker aged 30+ to be the heir; it found that Isenhurst had been conveyed to him (in the lifetime of his elder brother William) on 8 Jul 1547 with remainder to his brother Robert. Also mentioned was a watermill in Mayfield. The Baker family of Mayfield Place is descended from John and the Bakers of Birchden in Rotherfield and Middle House, Mayfield, from Robert
