The award ceremony was held on 19 October 1982.The shortlisted authors were:Thomas Keneally with the winning novel 'Schindler's Ark', published by Hodder & Stoughton,John Arden with 'Silence Among the Weapons', published by Methuen,William Boyd with 'An Ice-Cream War', published by Hamish Hamilton,Lawrence Durrell with 'Constance or Solitary Practices', published by Faber & Faber,Timothy Mo with 'Sour Sweet', published by Deutsch, andAlice Thomas Ellis with 'The 27th Kingdom', published by Duckworth.The Judges were Professor John Carey (Chair), Paul Bailey, Frank Delaney, Janet Morgan, and Lorna Sage.
