George Walter Prothero came up to King's College from Eton in 1868 to study Classics. He was elected a Fellow of the College in 1872 and after two years spent at Eton and in Bonn, he returned to Cambridge in 1874. From this period he held various posts within the College and the University until his appointment as Professor of History at the University of Edinburgh. From 1899 he lived in London, promoting historical studies. He was President of the Royal Historical Society and editor of the Cambridge Modern History series. He died on 10 July 1922.
