Accords of West Sussex Record Office Additional Manuscripts
INTRODUCTION
This is the fortieth volume of Additional Manuscripts (Add Mss) to have been catalogued in the West Sussex Record Office and it has been compiled, in general, along the lines indicated in the introduction to the first volume in November 1956
The class of Additional Manuscripts embraces all the smaller gifts and deposits of documents received by the West Sussex Record Office, as distinct from the large family and estate collections, such as the Goodwood Mss., or accumulations from solicitors' offices, such as Oglethorpe and Anderson Mss.; collections of official bodies, such as Quarter Sessions Records; or collections from other bodies, such as the Records of the Royal Sussex Regiment, each of which is referred to and quoted by name. The majority of Additional Manuscripts have been deeds of title, though increasingly a healthy balance of a vast range of other original material has been catalogued in these volumes. However, the pressure of the sheer weight of material to be catalogued has meant that since volume twenty nine in March 1983, the catalogues of title deeds, instead of being the detailed calendars that had been prepared until that date, have mainly been catalogued in summary lists, with the emphasis being placed on the property concerned in the transaction, rather than on the parties involved, or the technicalities of the type of legal conveyance being used. From the thirty sixth volume in November 1987, the Accession number of each collection catalogued is given at the head of each separate catalogue
This volume lists the usual number of small deposits mostly concerning deeds of title, and includes several theses, such as R.G.P. Kerridge, 'Society and Economy along the Coastal plain during the seventeenth century', 1988 (Add Mss 41,004); Janet Pennington, 'The Wiston Estate, Sussex. Crown Sequestration and its effects, 1596-1634', 1989 (Add Mss 41,172) and Jeff Chamberlain, '"The Changes and Chances of this mortal life": The Vicissitudes of High Churchmanship and Politics among the Clergy of Sussex', 1992 (Add Mss 41,262). Of literary interest are copies of the diaries of Sarah Wells (H.G. Wells's mother), 1848-1899 (Add Mss 41,235 - 41,239), and Robert Gittings's working papers for his biography of John Keats (Add Mss 42,136 - 42,140). Religious records, include letter books, letters and hymns written by the Dependents, c.1885-1953 (Add Mss 42,153 - 42,158); sporting records include the Minute Books of Chichester Bowling Club, 1972-1982 (Add Mss 42,191 - 42,192) and archaeological records include plans, correspondence and trench books of Chichester District Archaeological Unit, 1980 - 1990 (Add Mss 41,908 - 42,005). The documents listed in the volume range in date from a group of thirteenth century title deeds of properties in Wisborough Green (Add Mss 41,241 - 41,242) to Jeff Chamberlain's Ph.D. Thesis 1992 (Add Mss 41,262)
No index has been provided for this volume, as all the relevant details of this and all previous volumes have been included in the card indexes of persons, places, manors and subjects, which are to be found in the Search Room of the West Sussex Record Office
Searchers are again asked to exercise care in quoting references, and to use the form Add Mss followed by the relevant number or numbers. In printed works the reference should be preceded by 'West Sussex Record Office' (or 'W.S.R.O.' in subsequent references). Those wishing to photocopy items catalogued in these pages should ask permission from the Search Room Supervisor and sign the appropriate copyright forms, and those seeking to quote documents in published work, should ask permission in writing from the County Archivist
