Administrative / biographical background

Operators of collieries in the Newcastle area including Elswick Colliery, Glue House Lane, Newcastle which was the Company headquarters.

Elswick Colliery was first owned by William Cochran Carr Ltd, but in 1874 William Cochran Carr formed a partnership with others to operate the colliery as The Owners of Elswick Colliery. This partnership was dissolved in 1880 and the colliery sold to the newly-incorporated Elswick Coal Co Ltd in 1881.

Elswick Coal Co Ltd converted to a private company in 1935. The company went into receivership in 1940.
