Captain Noel Victor Williams, Machine Gun Corps, second son of Mr. and Mrs. Campbell Williams, of Freer Rood, Handsworth, has been awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the Western front, between August 24 and 31. An official record states: “This officer was temporarily in command of his company, and at short notice was called upon to draw up the plan of action for launching his company to the attack. On August 24, after the objective had been gained, he made a personal reconnaissance of his guns under heavy shell and machine-gun fire, coordinating their dispositions so as to meet the tactical requirements of the situation. He carried out his task with considerable ability. His energy and contempt of personal danger were an example to all ranks, and, coupled with the care and forethought he displayed for his men under very trying conditions, prove him to be a capable company commander.” Captain Williams joined the Artists' Rifles in August, 1914, and obtained his commission in the Durham Light Infantry in 1915, afterwards being transferred to the Machine Gun Corps. He has been in France since January, 1915. He was wounded in the second battle of Ypres, went through the Somme fighting of 1916, and in October of that year was invalided home. He was present at the battle for Cambrai in 1917, and has been on the Western front during all the operations of the present year. Prior to joining the Army he was a member of the staff of the old Metropolitan Bank, Bennett’s Hill, Birmingham. Photo (Birmingham Mail - Saturday 12 October 1918 p2);
